Dolly Rebecca Parton
Dolly Rebecca Parton was conceived in
Pittman Center on January 19 1946. She was born in Sevierville to Avie Lee
Parton (a housewife) and Robert Lee Parton (a tobacco farmer). At the age of
12, she was already appearing on Knoxville TV. At 13 she was already recording
on a label of a small size and singing at Grand Ole Opry. She relocated to
Nashville in 1964 to begin her country-singing career after she had graduated
from high school. She became a fan of Carl Dean, who ran an asphalt-paving
company. They were married on May 30th June, 1966, and they are still together.
In 1967 , her singing attracted the attention of Porter Wagoner, who hired her
to be a part of his program, The Porter Wagoner Show (1961). She stayed with
the show for 7 years, their duets were a hit and she was a part of his band on
the Grand Ole Opry; she also toured and sold records. In 1970, when her hit
song "Joshua" was ranked at #1, her fame was just too big to be able
to compete with his. In 1974, she set out on her own and recorded duets
alongside the singer. In 1974, she parted ways with him to be a solo artist.
Dolly was a massive success as a singer/songwriter. Dolly received numerous
Country Music Association awards (1968 1970, 1970, 1971 1975, 1976). She was a
small (5'0") beauty who was an ideal choice for television. In the late
1970s, Dolly was often seen on Talk-shows and television specials, before
receiving her own show, Dolly (1976). In 1977, Dolly got her first Grammy
award: Best Female Country Vocal Performance for her hit song "Here You
Come Again." Dolly's first appearance in a film was in 9-to-5 (1980) In
the film, she was awarded an Oscar nomination for her song title and Grammy
awards 2 and 3. Also, she won Grammy awards 2 and 3 Best Country Song and Best
Female Country Vocal Performance, for the track "Nine to Five." Her
most notable role was in The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas (1982) and
Rhinestone (1984) in which she sang "Tennessee Homesick Blues". She
is the founder of Dolly Parton Enterprises, a $100 million media company, and
in 1986, she established Dollywood, a theme park located in Pigeon Forge,
Tennessee, to honor her Smoky Mountain childhood. She appeared as herself in
the Dolly (1987) television series. For "Trio" she was awarded the
Best Country Performance Duo or Group with Vocals Grammy in 1988.
